Overcoming Social Anxiety - Three Tips That You Will Want to Party About

For people overcoming social anxiety, parties can be a particular challenge. Here are three tips you will want to party about that, when you have had enough practice, will make you the belle of any ball.

Shy people tend to have unrealistic expectations of the results of social overtures. The fact is, you can be a wonderful person with terrific social skills, and not everyone is going to want to talk with you all the time. That's because, from their perspective, it's not all about you. On the other hand, if someone is inclined to criticize you for some minor social error, you probably want to move on and seek to interact with someone else. No one is perfect. You don't have to be, either.

2. Push yourself to be outgoing.

Just as the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, the social interactions of the rest of your life begin with the next conversation. The very next time you find yourself in a group, make a point of engaging at least one person in a conversation about something of importance to the group. The next time, talk with two people. Keep practicing until you can strike up conversations with a whole group of people around you. It won't be easy at first, but it will get easier as you get used to it.

3. Listening is OK, too.

Just as you enjoy having other people listen to you, other people enjoy your listening to them. When you don't feel like talking, take the listening role. Ask the other person questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Give since compliments. If you are at a social function and you see someone else who looks shy, reach out to him or her. They will probably be grateful for your attention, and the practice will help you feel more comfortable overcoming social anxiety as you reach out to all kinds of people in all types of social situations.
